Thinking of joining?

What is a governing council?

Governing councils are bodies that govern a school or preschool. Governing councils work with the Principal to help set and monitor the direction of the school.

The Henley High School Governing Council meets twice a term on Monday’s from 6.00pm to 8.30pm.

Working on any council will involve some commitment of time, including time for governing council meetings, or if you are a member of a subcommittee. Additional time may be needed if you take on extra duties, like a chairperson, treasurer, or secretary. There will also be special events where you will represent the governing council, be asked to provide feedback, or represent the school at community events, like at the annual general meeting.

Sub committees

At Henley High School we have a number of sub committees you may wish to be part of. You do not have to be a governing council member to participate in the sub committees.

Uniform

Maintain and review the school’s uniform policy and make any adjustment to the policy, procedures and dress code in consultation with the school community.

Environment and sustainability

Monitor and review processes and procedures for the school environment which may include special projects to improve environmental aspects of the school and its grounds.

Canteen

Monitor and review processes and procedures for the school canteen facilities, working with the contracted canteen business to ensure it delivers products and services in line with school community expectations.

Finance

Responsible for the oversight of the school’s budget to ensure effective expenditure on teaching and learning and school-based priorities.

Your responsibilities

As a parent member of a governing council, you have the same responsibilities as other volunteers with access to Department for Education schools and preschools.

This means you:

  • are required to complete the Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care (RRHAN-EC) training
  • are considered a mandated notifier.
  • may be required to hold a valid working with children check.

How long will you be on the council?

Positions are declared at the annual general meeting.

The time you volunteer on the council is usually two years and is sometimes called a ‘term in office’. There are standard terms, but it is different depending on what type of member you are.

If your personal circumstances change you can always withdraw from the governing council.

Payments

The work you do on a council is as a volunteer. You are not paid for your time. Some out-of-pocket expenses might be covered by the site, but this will depend on the site’s policy.
