2023 DUX of the School
In the bustling streets of Hong Kong, I was born into a loving family with me as the only child. Despite the unwavering support of my parents, my academic journey in my homeland wasn’t smooth sailing. My grades were lacklustre, and the mere thought of studying filled me with dread. Yearning for a fresh start and a chance to uncover my true passions, I harboured dreams of studying abroad since I was in Year 9.
When the opportunity arose to pursue my education in a new environment, my parents wholeheartedly embraced my decision. Thus, in early 2022, I found myself on unfamiliar shores, stepping foot in Australia and enrolling at Henley High School. The transition wasn’t without its hurdles; I grappled with homesickness, struggled to forge friendships, and navigated the unfamiliar landscape of Australian education, with its unique challenges like SHE assignments and science practical reports.
Yet, amidst the uncertainties, there were moments of light that illuminated my journey at Henley High School. Cooking became a newfound passion, especially in my Food and Hospitality classes where I mastered the art of crafting delectable dishes, with pavlova emerging as a personal favourite. Even in unexpected places like biology class, where we delved into the science of fermentation by making bread, I found joy in learning and camaraderie with my peers.

As Year 12 drew to a close, the idea of becoming the DUX of the school seemed like a distant dream. So, when the announcement came and I was bestowed with the honour, disbelief washed over me. It was a testament to the toil and dedication poured into my studies over the past two years—a validation that hard work truly reaps rewards.
Looking ahead, I’ve set my sights on the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Medical Imaging) at the University of South Australia, with aspirations of one day becoming a radiologist. It’s a path I tread with excitement and determination, fueled by the experiences and lessons gleaned from my time at Henley High School.
To my teachers, whose guidance and encouragement shaped my journey, I extend my deepest gratitude. Without them, this achievement would have remained a distant dream. As I embark on this new chapter, I carry with me the invaluable lessons and memories forged during my time at Henley High School, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Ottilie devoted herself to her studies, achieving outstanding academic results since she joined Henley High School at the start of 2022. Her resilience and perseverance was evident from the start, as one of the first students to return to study with us once the boarders reopened after COVID, spending her first two weeks of her Australian school life in online learning. Ottilie faced all the challenges of the post COVID time while adapting to Australian school culture and achieving highly. Not only dedicating herself to her studies, Ottilie also contributed to student leadership as an International Leader at Henley. She also held a leadership position as an International Ambassador for International Education Services, providing student voice and agency to support International students across the state.
Congratulations, Ottilie, we are very proud of you and your achievements!
