Surf Lifesaving & Swimming


The aim of Henley High School’s Specialist Sport Program is to assist student athletes in their sporting and academic pathway. Students have two 100 minute lessons per week over the whole year. The Specialist Sport Surf Life Saving and Swimming Program focus for each term includes:

Term 1

  • Theory Focus:  Pool conditioning and Coaching Accreditations (Fundamentals and Development). Specialist Coaching (Year 9 and 10 – coach assisting Surf Safety in Primary Schools and Yr 11 – coaching SLC students at Henley High)
  • Practical Focus:  Individual & team race strategy development and Competition preparation: Students compete against other SSP SLS in preparation for state and Australian titles.

Term 2

  • Theory Focus:  Coaching Accreditations (Fundamentals and Development), Selection of various SLS awards, Performance Presentation.
  • Practical Focus: Individual, team event and strategy development, swimming conditioning

Term 3

  • Theory Focus:  Nutrition Guest Speaker, Fitness Analysis – Students analyse their diet, identify fitness components relevant to their position and complete fitness tests and collect data to evaluate.
  • Practical Focus: Kayak paddling, Individual and group fitness, time trials and strength conditioning

Term 4

  • Theory Focus:  Individual, team and strategy development, Competition (Students compete against other SSP SLS in anticipation for state and interstate carnivals, Surf trip to develop surf skills)
  • Practical Focus: Fitness and general conditioning
